2008 Season In Review

The 2008 racing season for Dunn-Olivieri Racing was one most teams would be thrilled to have, but for the third year team of Russ and Dan Dunn and Dave Olivieri. it was a year of missed opportunities. A decision was made at the startof the year not to run for points at anyone track, so the team took to the road each and every week. The 2008 season began in April and ended in October and along the way the team traveled through Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and West Virginia. Often called the “road warriors” this years team traveled to nine tracks: Challenger Raceway, Mercer Raceway Park, PPMS, Tri-City Speedway, 250 Speedway, Muskingum Speedway, Raceway 7, Sharon Speedway and Stateline Speedway.

The track the team visited the most in 2008 was Sharon Speedway, but it was also the track that seemed to have the teams number. The only DNF of the year came when the motor blew while leading the race and on two other occasions the team suffered a mechanical problem while leading, but were able to finish .Rain was also a big winner in 2008 with the cancellation of eight races the team had planed on running. The twenty races were the fewest Dunn-Olivieri have raced since their partnership began in 2006. The twenty races saw seven top three finishes (35 %) including the teams on win on the 4th of July at Raceway 7 and ten top fives (50%). The team also picked up four heat race wins. A mid season decision to follow the newly formed UMES E-Mod Series gave the opportunity to run in series and despite missing one race finished fourth in the final standings.

Racing is not only a hobby for Dunn-Olivieri Racing, it is a labor of love and expensive one at that. Without the help of our sponsors much of what we do would not be possible. Dunn-Olivieri Racing would like to thank our 2008 sponsors: Dan Dunn Trucking,Vecenie Distributing (Iron City & Straub Beer), Frankland Racing, American Race Tire, Lias Tire, and Domhoff Racing Engines and Oyler Action Photography and Web Design.

Thanks Everyone and see ya all in 2009!!!!

October 4th – Mercer Raceway Park Fall Brawl

Mercer, Pa ….Six months earlier the 2008 season began on a chilly evening in April and concluded with chilly evening in October with a little bit of irony, both races were at MRP and were UEMS races. The FALL BRAWL posted its largest payout ever for the E-Mod Division and with that payout came a record number of E-Mods (58) fifty eight on hand for the MEMS season finally.

The large field of cars had the areas top drivers battling in six eight lap heat races with the top two in each heat going in the feature redraw and third place finishers advancing to the feature. Starting sixth in the (Oyler Racing Photo) heat race saw Dunn, quickly gain the lead on lap two and never looked back in winning the sixth and final heat race . The redraw gave Dunn a seventh place start for the 30 lap feature. The action was fast and furious as the first ten laps went green flag racing with this star studded field of drivers vying for each and every position. The restart still had Dunn running in 7th and in touch with the leaders. The middle portion of the race saw some of the best side by side racing of the year when the caution flag came out on lap 18 and lap 22 now had Dunn running 6th. Racinghad for positions, Dunn was now up to 5th when the races final caution flag flew on lap 27. The final restart saw Dunn, advance one more position to 4th as the checker flags flew to end a spectacular UEMS season and the third season for Dunn-Olivieri Racing.

The fouth place finish at Mercer gave Dunn-Olivieri Racing a fouth place finish in the inaugural UEMS season. With it’s debut at Mercer in May the series had races at Little Valley, Tri-City, and PPMS. The series saw 111 drivers participating, with an average of 38 cars per event . Preparations for the 2009 season will begin in the next few weeks, so keep checking the web site to catch up on what is happening at Dunn-Olivieri Racing.
